I find something uplifting about really dark movies. Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and Sin City all hit the same chord with me -- The story is so fundamentally saddening, and yet I feel uplifted having seen it. I couldn't stop grinning at the climax of Pi, for example.

I found the ending of Pi thought provoking, and I really liked the movie because it echoed a part of me that obsesses over problems like that.
I've never seen Requiem for a Dream.
I did find Sin City to be uplifting in an odd way. My reaction was more to the level of graphic detail than it was to the story or characters. I really liked the story about Goldie. The main character of that story was a guy you couldn't help but like. I laughed at a bit where he called someone else a violent sociopath. And someone else's opinion I read was right, he made "The Punisher" look like a pansy. :-)
