Sin City

I watched Sin City with rainonthewind yesterday. It was... hard to describe. Gritty and filled with callous violence. Lots grotesque, disgusting and macabre imagery.

OTOH, there were people who I could care about, who seemed like good people to me. It didn't suffer from the Pulp Fiction evil of largely having no characters who you could believe were worth ( Read more... )

This is an interesting and unexpected reaction. I didn't find much disgusting (except for the yellow dude at the end, but he's the bad guy so it doesn't count).

I find something uplifting about really dark movies. Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and Sin City all hit the same chord with me -- The story is so fundamentally saddening, and yet I feel uplifted having seen it. I couldn't stop grinning at the climax of Pi, for example.

It might have some parallel to the reaction others have to horror movies, I suppose - I can't stand horror, but I love nihilistic arty flicks.

I found the ending of Pi thought provoking, and I really liked the movie because it echoed a part of me that obsesses over problems like that.

I've never seen Requiem for a Dream.

I did find Sin City to be uplifting in an odd way. My reaction was more to the level of graphic detail than it was to the story or characters. I really liked the story about Goldie. The main character of that story was a guy you couldn't help but like. I laughed at a bit where he called someone else a violent sociopath. And someone else's opinion I read was right, he made "The Punisher" look like a pansy. :-)

I'm waiting for The Interpreter to come out. It looks pretty good. Keyword: looks.
