I hadn't noticed at first how horrible the commentary was going, because I was on Skype with several friends and we were all too excited about England: The Musical and couldn't hear anyway.
The independent athletes were so awesome omg.
Sucks to hear that Otakon was so lame (really, what are the organizers thinking) ONE OF THESE DAYS, THE CLOSER CONS WON'T SUCK SO MUCH.
A lot of people were so upset about the Opening. Two of the people I was with were like WHAT DOES THIS EVEN HAVE TO DO WITH THE OLYMPICS and I was like WHO CARES IT'S MR. BEAN JUST SHUT UP except I didn't voice that because I didn't need drama this weekend. But I thought it really hard. I also missed a huge chunk of it, which made me sad. I didn't get why people were upset about it, though? Whatever. I did feel really awkward when Muhammad Ali was there because I haven't forgotten what happened on Opening Day for the Miami Marlins this year (this clip is all I can find now, but it took like three minutes to get him out there, he couldn't really hold the ball... augh, it was just terrible).
I don't know what it is about NOT enjoying myself at conventions anymore. I don't go to panels because there's nothing that interests me, and I don't go to photoshoots to make friends because I can't deal with so many people, I can't seem to find the will to start watching new shows, so how do I get back into what I used to enjoy? :(
It seems like both "older folks" and people who take things waaay too seriously were the ones who didn't enjoy it. I mean, most people around our ages didn't even watch, but those who I spoke with enjoyed it. I was over the moon about it, and I can honestly say that I've never cared for the Olympics.
I dearly love to laugh, and I think that opening was crazy and fantastic, and if anything, it'll be memorable forever. Plus Tumblr that night was hilarious. This might sound stupid, but maybe it's the people around you. I love my friends, but anyone pisses me off if we're constantly in a clump. I never go to many panels, and I have my fun by running off by myself (or with just one person) like a chicken with my head cut off. I like trying to talk with new people, by pure accident or waiting on lines, dealer's room, etc, whether it's for a 5 minute convo or for the rest of the day. Makes me feel social for once. XD

But it's not the people around me because there was no one around me this weekend. I was by myself most of the time, and I was more trying to get from Point A to Point B and trying to avoid everything in between. Even when I'm shopping, I'm super-methodical: up one aisle, down the next; looking while I walk, stopping only to buy things. There was no bumping into people -- because I can avoid them -- no waiting on lines -- because there was nothing I wanted to get in to -- and ... yeah. There's just never anything for me to do.
We watched the CTV rerun and they skipped Best Korea and Latvia, among others, for commercials. But we had a Korean and a Latvian in our viewing audience so we were like, "Thanks, buttfaces". I would like to see the CBC and CTV share the games. None of this bidding bullshit.
I am missing almost all the cons this year. I did get tickets to Fan Expo, though.
The Parade of Nations is my favorite part of the Opening Ceremonies, but NBC was terrible about it. We skipped a bunch during commercials, too, but the ones that were skipped were always shown again, albeit briefly, after the commercials ended. The thing of it is, though, NBC was broadcasting on a three-and-a-half-hour delay, not live. There was no reason not to show all the countries in full instead of hurrying the less "popular," less well-known, and ones with smaller delegations along. They even cut away from other nations to show the United States again and again (I guess since we're towards the end, they gotta make up for all that time they couldn't show us from the start, if we were just called "America" instead). You can't even play devil's advocate and say that they had to try and cram all of it into a timeslot because it all lasted more than five hours. The best part of all this is that I hear NBC has exclusive rights to all Olympic coverage through 2020. Fan-freakin'-tastic

Well, good news for me. They just announced the CBC won the rights for the Sochi and Rio Olympics. CBC has the edge in coverage because they can do no commercials easier, as they have government funding (yay socialism). Hasn't NBC gotten the games for years now? And didn't they ignore their own anchors who argued FOR showing the 7/7 tribute?
I kinda like the social aspects of conventions more than anything. Just got an email this morning from friends asking where I was going to be for Otakuthon this weekend in Montreal. I was like "Next year ;.;" because work screwed me over with vacation time (they cut all our summer days).
