The Parade of Nations is my favorite part of the Opening Ceremonies, but NBC was terrible about it. We skipped a bunch during commercials, too, but the ones that were skipped were always shown again, albeit briefly, after the commercials ended. The thing of it is, though, NBC was broadcasting on a three-and-a-half-hour delay, not live. There was no reason not to show all the countries in full instead of hurrying the less "popular," less well-known, and ones with smaller delegations along. They even cut away from other nations to show the United States again and again (I guess since we're towards the end, they gotta make up for all that time they couldn't show us from the start, if we were just called "America" instead). You can't even play devil's advocate and say that they had to try and cram all of it into a timeslot because it all lasted more than five hours. The best part of all this is that I hear NBC has exclusive rights to all Olympic coverage through 2020. Fan-freakin'-tastic.
I miss cons, too, even while I'm at them, because I miss when they were shiny and new and fun and exciting. I would love to have that feeling back.
Well, good news for me. They just announced the CBC won the rights for the Sochi and Rio Olympics. CBC has the edge in coverage because they can do no commercials easier, as they have government funding (yay socialism). Hasn't NBC gotten the games for years now? And didn't they ignore their own anchors who argued FOR showing the 7/7 tribute?
I kinda like the social aspects of conventions more than anything. Just got an email this morning from friends asking where I was going to be for Otakuthon this weekend in Montreal. I was like "Next year ;.;" because work screwed me over with vacation time (they cut all our summer days).
