George, you're intelligent enough that I'm sure there's no way for me to phrase this without it sounding pretentious or similar. If you haven't heard this sort of thing from me over the years, you'll have heard it somewhere. But..

You're better than that STUFF! You have what you need to be happy, right inside of you. The purchase satisfaction will always be short-lived - if it wasn't, you wouldn't keep buying new stuff. And that's what's important to them. Actually keeping you unhappy. I'm not saying you should or could be happy all the time, but the potential is there. You have to find ways of getting to it. It's a vicious cycle: when everything seems to be letting you down, whether its emotions or consumer goods, of course you're going to wish for magic bullets.

You don't need to buy a house, dude.
If I knew some other way to say it, I would.

There's no rule that says you have to buy a place. There are definitely some benefits - when you move out, you'll be putting your money into something for yourself rather than a landlord's pocket - but it's also a huge commitment becoming a homeowner. If you're not sure, I'd look at renting for the short term while you make up your mind what you want to do. Renting with housemates might be a good option - it's much cheaper than going on your own, and it would give you company (though of course the challenge is finding the right people to share with.) I do think from everything you've said in the past that it would be good for you to get out of your parents' house ( ... )
