I know it's what everybody is talking about today, and to be honest even though I had tickets to go and see him I'd just been feeling frustrated about it, because I was looking forward to seeing him. Now, having got in from work, I've sat down a put a few songs on iTunes of his... It's actually pretty sad. I'm just listening to "Break of Dawn" ( Read more... )

Now Michael Jackson, who I really admired when I was quite young is dead, and it's like another little bit of my childhood is gone.

I very much agree.

I was in my early teens when Thriller was at the height of its monster success (I got a copy - on vinyl! - for my 13th birthday, but for the previous year or so I'd heard almost all of its songs everywhere).

It's amazing to recall just how big MJ was at that time (and I'm still stunned by the stat that, at its peak, Thriller was selling 250,000 copies a day).

For me, it all started to go wrong from Bad onwards - but before then, MJ was widely admired by many people ('Beat It' was even performed during the opening ceremony for the '84 Olympics). He was an exciting and inspiring talent.

Two celebrity deaths that have had a big impact on me are MJ's and Michael Hutchence of INXS - both were highly-talented musicians whose work (individually and with others) were big parts of my youth.
