Day 55, Morning

Mar 19, 2010 21:00

Gisela was nervous. She didn't think she should be - it was just Gunter, of all people. But the excitement of finally having her father home was not enough to hide that nagging thread of fear twisting up her stomach. What if it wasn't him? What if she was fooled again by the wrong one? And what kind of daughter can't tell the difference between her ( Read more... )

Gunter had every intention of finding his daughter the previous evening, but the late hour and his exhaustion had him asleep in the saddle on the way back to the castle. Thankfully both he and his mount were accustomed to wearyness and Cadifor had gotten him back to where they had started without incident.

He had decided that a pile of soft straw was as good as any bed to pass out in and it would keep his horse from getting lonely on his first night in a real stable. They didn't need any kicked in stall doors or trampled grooms should the stubborn and often tempermental warhorse decide he didn't like his new home.

Gisela's horse was not where he was supposed to be. While the mare taking up residence in his stall was very pretty, she was not a trusty brown stallion. Muttering under her breath, she stomped from stall to stall, peeking over doors, searching.

She stopped when her eyes fell on a horse she had never seen before. It hadn't been here yesterday. She was familiar with most of the horses here, and she would have remembered a creature like this one.

As she turned away, something glinting in the straw gave her pause. She levered herself up onto the door of the stall to peer over. Pale hair splayed over the straw.

What was he doing here?

She called out, "Father?"

Of course, it could be the double, but she wasn't thinking.

Cadifor eyed the newcomer with a wary crimson gaze and swung his large head forward. The little woman's hair was thick and green after all and bound to be more appetizing than his masters stringy moon spun locks ( ... )

She had shied away from the horse - it was really quite inconvenient to have green hair around herbivores - but didn't get far before Gunter had her by the shoulders. She kept her eyes on his, watching him carefully, taking in every word. Her lips moved, but there were too many questions at once and she just stammered a moment before hiding her face in his shoulder and returning the hug from over the stall door. "I was looking for you." Her voice trembled, and she was trying - and failing - not to cry.

"I can't imagine he would want to, but I suppose there's no harm in asking."

She sat up a bit and thanked the maid as a plate of pancakes was set before her, wondering how she was going to fit all of that in her stomach.

"He could use some training in maryoku. I can't help him with anything outside of healing, and we end up fighting anyway."

"That's an excellent idea! I will be sure to broach the subject to him when next we meet. He was such a help to me last night, I feel I do owe him something in return."

He gave her a look that meant he was watching her to make sure she didn't just push her food around on her plate. She hadn't been skipping breakfast the entire time he was gone, had she? It was certainly the most important meal of the day after all.

She didn't push her food around. She poked it and took small bites. It was good, but so much more than she was used to. So what if she skipped a few meals here and there? She was a busy woman! Who had time to eat?

"I can't think of a better teacher," she smiled across the table, and willed him to stop looking at her like that. "It would be wonderful if you both got along."

"Speaking of lessons, have you had time to keep up your sword practice since I've been gone? Perhaps if I find a few more students we could start up a regular class again. Even I wouldn't mind the excuse for some regular sparring to get back in shape."

Gunter smiled at her and went back to inhaling his own breakfast, satisfied that she was trying and making a note to be around for breakfast every day if only to spend more time with her.
