This has to be the most difficult first chapter in history. But I managed to throttle Aberforth till he was willing to speak. Sorry it's taken two weeks... Chapter 2 and 3 are already written, so the wait will be shorter, for sure.
Thanks for your comment, Div - it's heartening to know there are readers out there.. :') (hint, hint)

Are you going to try charting Indian magic in some detail? Sounds to me like that would make a very very interesting sidetrip... what language would Indian spells be in, to start with. Sanskrit?
Is Old Toby part of the first Order, spying for Dumbledore at the Hog's Head? And/or does he have anything to do with the Longbottoms? I'm asking 'cause IIRC, the old hobbit Tobold Hornblower lived in Longbottom in the Shire.

And yeah, I do plan to go into Indian magic a bit - which would be in Sanskrit in the really *old* books, and Prakrit in the newer versions, because 'mantravadis' didn't belong among the brahmin elite, did they? I don't know if Rati will have time to go into many detailed explanations, though... but we'll see.
Thanks for the reviews, Kav!

Prakrit sounds good. I was wondering about how you'd seep magic into the caste system as well. Would there be a separate rung for wizards and witches (this would satisfy the obsessive classifier in me), or just let magic pop up all over the place (more realistic?). And Indian magical schools should be very interesting, what with tons of languages and dialects to worry about, etc. This is going to be fun! Really looking forward to the rest of the fic.
