Celtic Saints

Reading "The Wisdom Of Celtic Saints" by Edward Sellner... It is a really amazing book! Although the lives of these Saints and the legends about them are not a novelty for me as such (I have previously read the ancient texts from Lady Gregory's collection, which I still consider the best of their kind -- especially their poetic parts, such as "Hymn ( Read more... )

Not just Celtic methodius December 12 2005, 18:43:15 UTC
It is not just Irish saints that are Celtic, but Scottish, Welsh and Cornish ones as well. Now Scotland and Wales are associated particularly with Calvinism, but that occurred long after the schism.

And even Anglo-Saxon saints are Orthodox. In fact one could say that England only became "Roman Catholic" when conquered by William of Normandy in 1066. He replaced most of the Anglo-Saxon bishops by his own nominees, and one of the new ones wrote the book that sent Western theology off at a tangent -- Anselm of Canterbury's Cur Deus homo.

Yes, of course it is not only Irish saints that are Celtic. But the fact is that most of the great Celtic saints are Irish (or at least lived in Ireland).
And since I am currently learning Irish, it is natural that I put the emphasis on them ;)

Of course I will! :) You can send them. It will be very interesting for me to read something like this -- and in Latin, too! It will be a much nicer way to practice my Latin than reading the poem of that pessimistic atheist, Lucretius ;)

And another thing: who wrote the book? Perhaps I can find it in our university library... There are a lot of very old editions (I am now reading Thucydides published in 1840!)
And, what about your window? You seem to have forgotten your own LJ ;)

Very interesting and pleasant supervision!8) It absolutely agree, as at me the similar impression too was made. Though unfortunately my knowledge of history of the Irish church are insignificant. But more all is sad, that the majority of Russian at all do not represent when veins even Sacred Patrick...:(

And it is not necessary to forget an enormous role Brittany sacred, natives of the Wales, brought the enormous contribution to history of celtic people. Owing to their diligence in Armorica the state of britts has been created.
