Sunday and Imram

Our reader was a little bit late for the Matins today, so Kyrios Manolis (the choirmaster) entrusted the Exapsalmos (the Six Psalms usually read in the beginning of Matins) to me. To tell the truth, I was a little bit nervous (as I always am when reading something in the church). But apparently I did it well, since Kyrios Manolis told me so ( Read more... )

Olga, it is terrific about the Exapsalmos. As I have been the Protopsaltis at the past two Churches that we have attended, our kids who are 8 (Sofia) and 11 (Anthony) have been doing the Exapsalmos for about 3 years. As a dad, it's a wonderful experience to watch as you kids grow up knowing our Liturgy as well as they do. It's a pleasure to be able share your experience!
God Bless!

Thanks for sharing "Death of St. Brenden"- I love Tolkien, but I had never even heard of it before!

I'm guessing you read in Greek in church, right? Do you read the Six Psalms from the kliros, or the middle of the church? If it's Greek, I'm impressed- I took a semester of New Testament Greek in seminary... much different stuff than Russian, although it helped me with my Slavonic. (Or did the Slavonic help me with my Greek?...)

Yes, it is Greek, and I read the psalms from the psaltiri (or kliros, as it is usually referred to in Russian churches). But, to tell the truth, it is not really a thing for me to boast of, because I speak (and partly think in) Modern Greek since I was 13 :) Of course, Ancient is not exactly the same, but it is not much different either. And, of course, there is the fact that Ancient Greek is my profession -- I am currently doing my MA in Classics.
Do you know Slavonic, then?
And I am glad you liked the poem! It is one of the least known works by Tolkien, that is why it is so difficult to find it.
