So, first of all, your two questions, while excellent ones, aren't likely to be questions that Some People would be willing to answer, or to answer with any degree of honesty, but I laud you for posing them. And I agree with you, absolutely.

Second, you're looking at this film with very modern eyes (and I know you know this). Made in 1955, this was still the era when kids played cowboys and Indians, and when there were still segregated schools and bathrooms, and when black people had to use different doors than white people. This whole era was about perpetuating the myth of Manifest Destiny without cost or conscience, an idea that a lot of people still embraced with enthusiasm because it meant they could live with their eyes closed about injustice and prejudice all around them. But a lot of people didn't see it as living with eyes closed. They saw it as The Way Things Are. So if Oklahoma! is white-washed, it's clearly a product of its time.

Yeah, I know that Some People won't ask themselves those questions, so I leave it to others, such as you, to ask in a still, small voice to hopefully jolt them out of complacency and into conscience ( ... )
