A Perspective I Hope I Never Have
I was in a waiting room this morning and, naturally, the talk was all about the local election. Not really the election though, just the incredibly annoying Robocalls (I got 15 the night before the election).
An elderly woman said, "Yes. And each time I ran to the phone praying it was my son in Haiti and he was safe." -

Well, the elections over and Martha Coakley lost by more than 100,000 votes.

A rather remarkable book
When Christian Appy's book Working-Class War came out in 1993 I did not read it. At that point reading time was scarce and I knew it was based on his Doctoral thesis so, expecting a bunch of academic mumpitz, I passed it by.
I had since read his Patriots: The Vietnam War Remembered From All Sides and found that quite good.

It was true then and it's true today.

Change at a glacial pace.
