Oh, it's more easily understood than I make it out to be. It just likes to add plot twists that border ludicrous and almost seem self-parodying.

And there are a lot of characters.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A SHISUI REVEAL SINCE....SINCE WE FOUND OUT IN A FLASHBACK WITHIN A FLASHBACK THAT HE DIED. ~~MYSTERIOUSLY~~ (aka by Itachi's hand, nyoro~n)

I think he's started self-trolling just to see if we can tell the difference.

eta: Oh, re:his genjutsu, I'm not sure (being that these are early spoilers and I'm not getting this firsthand), but the impression I get is that he was capable of casting a mental-influencing genjutsu so subtly that the enemy would be incapable of even figuring out they were being influenced, versus Ino's techniques or regular genjutsu illusions that can be dispelled once realization hits.
