Ohhhhh my god would dumbass celebrities stop spouting off about this.

"The cats (who keep the rodent population under control)"

You know what else they also keep "under control"? ALL THE NATIVE ANIMALS. WHICH THEY KILL.

"The people of Australia would never agree to this"

Actually plenty of the people of Australia do agree.

"The cats are, in fact, 2 million smaller versions of Cecil The Lion"

Shut up.

I mean, I like cats as much as the next person but this is such a tone-deaf complaint, just yesterday there was a piece in the Guardian about how refugee children are being abused in Australia's detention centers.

u know whats more fucked up? that it is now law that doctors/nurses that work there are not allowed to report abuse

what is the reasoning behind this? :(

to make the government look like they have their shit together. they also made it illegal to report on the number of refugees arriving by makeshift boats, this also makes it look like the government has deterred them away when really theyre still coming

trap neuter return really works

it's become official policy in miami dade county & it's drastically reduced the rate of euthanizations in shelters.

Except the returned cats can still eat native animals.

I think they should be doing things other than culling cats as well, because culling will be hard to manage and probably barely make a dent, tbh. It should be compulsory to de-sex your cat (something they are considering bringing in) and they can use other techniques. But yeah just neutering feral cats will not solve the problem either. It needs to be a multi-pronged effort.

but essentially, a really stringent TNR program will eventually have a huge impact...by eliminating offspring, the average feral cat will die in about 4-6 years. sure, you aren't getting instant results, but its the most humane, long-term plan.

Yeah but how many native species will they decimate in that time? I don't know the answer but to me, if it is a significant impact, which it is likely to be, it's worth taking an extreme approach to feral cat management.

Another problem is that feral cats' territory is literally all of Australia, so doing some sort of trap neuter release seems difficult feasibility-wise. Having said that, the same would be true of any approach, including culling - it's another issue that has to be dealt with.
