lmao this dude cares more about feral cats than about racial minorities, how tragic.
this situation does suck though, culling animals for any reason is really unfortunate, especially in situations like this where it could be avoidable? idk SPAY AND NEUTER UR PETS Y'ALL!
i mean Oz and NZ have major issues with their indigenous wildlife being killed off by animals that were introduced into the ecosystem. massive island nations like that ought to take any steps they need to to preserve their wildlife - there are SO many animals there that exist nowhere else in the world, their ecosystems are marvels of evolution. so idk morrisey fucking cry a little
OK where did they say that people WEREN'T responsible for this? People are 100% at fault here and this is actually ONE TIME that our piss-for-brains government is actually making a decision that will HELP our unique and beautiful native habitats and species in order to undo what idiot settlers did 250 years ago.
It's an unfortunate way to do it, but it's necessary. Life can't be all buttercups and rainbows all the time you know.
Unless your suggestion is to, IDK, allow thousands of native species that are completely unique to Australia to be hunted out of existence by ferals because "NO DON'T KILL THE KITTIES! LET STUPID HUMANS PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKES BY ALLOWING MORE ANIMALS TO DIE (even though they're rarer and, statistically speaking, more important to conserve)!"
eh..i love cats and it's sad that they had to resort to this instead of preventive sterelization but indigenous wildlife is at risk of disappearing so idt they have a choice.
The reason for controlling the population of feral cats is that they're an introduced super predator species that fucks up the local wildlife, many of which are endangered. Fuck Abbott and all but, this is actually done to save animals who need saving, and don't exist anywhere else on Earth.
that's very interesting to know.. I wonder when cats were introduced at all, it seems obvious that you shouldn't have brought them there in the modern view
Prior to colonization, Australia had one of the most unique ecosystems and now all of that is fading. Even within the last hundred years the affect of degradation on the environment has been near catastrophic. It's heartbreaking, honestly.
OK I love cats but feral cat colonies are a goddamn disaster. Feral cats carry rabies and parasites, they're sick, hungry and miserable for their entire short, brutal lives, and that's not even getting into all the local wildlife they destroy. Once again Morrissey has no idea what he's talking about, quelle surprise.
I sound like a person who volunteered with a TNR program in an area with a serious feral cat problem for years, actually. Once in awhile we'd stumble across a cat that had clearly been someone's pet, and they got fostered, but the vast majority of those animals were wild to the bone and a complete mess. They breed like crazy, they fight like crazy, they beat up people's pets and give them FeLV and FIV not to mention rabies which is actually a thing especially in areas with lots of other wildlife, and most importantly they don't belong where they are. They're introduced apex predators, always a bad, bad scene.
TNR is preferable. When you're dealing with 2 million feral cats in a place with an unusually delicate ecosystem, TNR is not feasible.
+1, they're acting like we are talking about a couple of feral cats. Even if they wanted to, there is no way they can adopt 2 million cats, it's ridiculous to even think about it. I mean most shelters can barely adopt a couple of dozens.
