I still go back in the closet sometimes. If I'm at a party or social situation where there's homophobia going on I'm not going to make myself a target. What's most uncomfortable for me is when people make anti-gay jokes to me not knowing that the brunt of their joke is standing right in front of them.

As someone who came out a little bit more than 10 years ago, I can tell you whether it gets better or not.

A closeted person has no idea.
