I haven’t watched it in awhile but it’s solid mindless entertainment. It’s not that deep or anything, or even one of Ridley’s best movies, but Russell and Joaquin are really great. In classic Ridley fashion, it has zero interest in being historically accurate whatsoever. That being said, I think it’s one of Joaquin’s best performances so worth it in particular for him.

Still, it should not have won Best Picture over Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Erin Brokovich!

It's ahistorical and overrated imo and not a Best Picture winner in the least, but Joaquin's Commodus is entertaining baddie (tbh I was rooting for him despite myself).
