I’m never going to be surprised that the Polanski supporter doesn’t write great female characters.

the reactions to this have been crazy bc like. she's right. everyone always brings up Ellen Burstyn but Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore was made in NINETEEN SEVENTY-FOUR!!! that is literally a half-century ago. and yes of course there have been decent roles for women in Scorsese movies since then, including Casino and Lily Gladstone literally just had one in KOTFM which is a fantastic movie! but then you have Wolf of Wall Street where Margot Robbie is sexy, and then The Irishman where Anna Paquin barely has any dialogue.

so yeah. he does have a problem writing for more than one woman in an entire film, and that's a reasonable critique. some legitimate film critics acting like Nicole motherfuckin' Kidman is bitter about never landing a role in his movie, or is pathetic for pointing this out is insane!

And the women in his films are written as accessories to the men. Their stories aren’t driving the plot.

exactly. we should all give scorsese his due for the work he does behind the scenes, but that shouldn't exempt him from valid criticism! and we should all critique him for you know. making movies this fucking long and never challenging himself to improve the way he writes for women!

Not people being mad about this 😭 I just listened to the season of the Newcomers podcast about his movies and watched a few of them, and I will say that in Goodfellas at least, I was pleased with how Karen was written. There was a level of depth to her that you rarely see women receive in mob stories and she was just as much of a fully realized character as the men. But that movie was over 30 years ago, so this is a very valid take from Nicole!
