I love parts of his recent films but I haven't loved a film of his since The Departed.

I enjoyed it on an aesthetic and emotional level before the trans allegory clicked. I think it also works as an allegory for living, or failing to, authentically in the world, whether that's related to gender, sexuality, making art, the crushing homogeneity of capitalism, etc. As a lifelong Buffy fan, I appreciated that the film was full of references (visual and thematic) to BTVS, but not in a way that felt like a cheap appeal to nostalgia - rather, they support the themes of the film. I could talk about this movie all day!
