i think paul and eddie seem like nice people, who are not particularly committed to conventional/harmful performances of masculinity, but this clip makes clear that still doesn't compensate for not living with the daily reality of violence. i like that denzel wasn't involved in their joking about it, he seems like such a graceful and thoughtful person and maybe this is actually something that crossed his mind and prevented him from joking about it.

I imagine a black man, especially when he was young, really had to think about it.

Her energy in this was amazing. She's so relaxed and confident in the dead silence. The "amirite, ladies?" just clinched it.

it was a masterclass of lightening the mood and engaging the audience, all while also reinforcing her point.

Whenever I see the topic of women’s safety come up, I always see men talk about how men are attacked more etc. However, men also constantly act surprised over the idea of taking precautions and trying not to be attacked.

The fact that the vast majority of men who experience violence will experience it at the hands of other men does not even register for most men. I think they understand it as something that could only happen to "certain" men a.k.a weak men, men who aren't "real" men, and since they are not those kinds of men, there's no reason to ever worry about how they are going to protect themselves from other men ever. And to worry about something that can't even be theoretically possible such as women attacking men... Well...

I really don't understand the lack of self preservation that cis het men have. Choosing to protect a violent masculinity that exists to destroy you along with everyone else is immeasurably stupid. The way that men think that they NATURALLY know how to defend themselves from physical violence since REAL MEN GRRR, throw fists and knives and shoot guns... I sometimes think that the fact that they have no empathy for THEMSELVES is one of the reasons they have none for everyone else.
