I know Kate Winslet is not actually plus-sized (at least in the REAL WORLD definition - Hollywood remains fucking dumb), but I actually really like her body shape! She's not a twig and has actual curves, and I hate to bring up the regime because that show continues to piss me off for what a waste it was, but her assortment of costumes just fit her so nicely and she looked great playing an incompetent dictator.

I was a young teen when Titanic came out, and I remember all too well the "fat" talk around Kate Winslet. It was pounded into my head that SHE was "chubby," "plus size," "big," etc. Which of course is completely fucked. It'd be nice if one day women's bodies weren't held to impossible standards. But let's be serious, that will never happen.

Kind of related… I realize I really appreciate how queen latifah & melissa mccarthy were treated when they first came out (or how I remember). I don’t feel like it was ever a thing that Sookie was bigger and mike & molly was the first role I recall about her being overweight.
Has queen latifah’s size ever been addresses in her roles? I cannot think of anything but my frame of reference also isn’t that large.

Behind the scenes of Living Single they talked about how some of the ladies would fluctuate in size (which I presume meant Queen Latifah and Kim Coles) and how they had to figure that out in terms of costuming.

On the show, there were a few times when they would address Kadijah having a large bust (but they also had a whole episode about Regine getting a breast reduction, and that was one of the times they talked about Kadijah's breasts, too), and Synclaire once commented about how she was much "meatier" than Overton. But those were the only times I remember something weight related being brought up on the show.

in living single it was never addressed, which i loved. khadijah was understood the coolest and most desirable one because it was her show! she never dated fat guys. she always had the hot guys. remember grant hill singing off key for her? remember how overton's little person barber thought she was sexy? remember when the audience set her up with hamilton's cheap ass after max and regine were fighting for him? the biggest guy anyone on the show got involved with was heavy d and he was with regine!

In Fresh Prince, Latifah's size was a plot point, because Will really liked her but his friends made fun of him for it.

I never knew until adulthood that Kate Winslet was considered plus-sized while filming Titanic. Her body was and is beautiful regardless of whatever size range people thought she belonged to. And it suits her well, she wore those period costumes so beautifully; I was STUNNED every time a new scene with her started.

So I’d like to say I don’t get it, but I do remember the beauty standards of my childhood being like either you’re Mary Kate and Ashley level skinny, or you should skip lunch. Especially when it came to people in the public eye. It’s a wonder that these female stars made it out alive😪
