this is still so surreal to me tbh. and i think there can be nuance in a situation like this, in that the fans are allowed to mourn the kid that went up on that xfactor stage, not necessarily the person he became.
Katie Waissel posted a nice tribute and also called out Simon/Syco:
It is with a profoundly heavy heart that I share this statement on the tragic loss of my dear friend, Liam Payne. We first met in 2010 on The X Factor, where Liam became my confidant and my rock, offering unwavering support during some of my darkest moments on that journey.
this is a really well-written statement and ia with her, especially when you’re talking about actual kids/teens the focus should be on their wellbeing vs how much money you can make off them. but maybe it’s naive to think it’d be any other way!
We need only look at Simon Cowell’s recent interview with Steven Bartlett, where he admits his greatest regret was not owning the band’s name.
For a man who claims his life was completely changed by having a son, a son he claims to love more than anything in the world, he sure doesn't give a shit about anyone else's children. What an awful thing to identify as your greatest regret.
I feel for his family and all the future people including his band who are expected to put out statements now. I can’t even imagine what a strange and oddly specific position to be in, to have to come to terms with the death of someone who you were intensely close and together with 24/7 to basically having no contact afterward. But now the world is going to expect you to say how you feel about it all. Just sad.
I hope it's in a coordinated way like with the cast of Friends where they made one statement and then later talk about it on their own when they want to. If they do separate statements it's going to be picked apart to death
