sigh. what a tragic life.

"Priscilla told Lisa Marie she thought about miscarrying her by falling off her horse because she didn't want pregnancy weight as Elvis' wife."

this is so insane, my god.

I honestly will have to put a trigger warning for every chapter because it's generational trauma on trauma on trauma.

I've read the latter chapters on how much more horrible Priscilla becomes as a mother and i feel so bad for Lisa Marie.... and Benjamin looked just like Elvis.

I have such complicated feelings about Priscilla. She was an awful mother, but then she had her own horrific trauma she was dealing with.

Thank you op for the write up! I don't have a lot of time to read books much these days so this is wonderful.

Of course! It was actually soothing to do because the book was so heavy at times, I was able to take a break and focus on the summary/transcription. I also like making lists so this wasn't the worst thing to do lol

It looks like the audibook is free on Spotify, but I'm not sure if I'll listen to it or not so I'm glad to read the excerpts.

I never knew all that much about the lives of the family, so it's interesting to hear about.

I don’t think Priscilla stood a chance at being a good mother to Lisa tbh. She was only a child herself when she got with Elvis and he was riddled with weird issues with women. A quote from his Wikipedia:

Brent D. Taylor has stated that "Elvis's closest female relationships were usually with young girls of around 13 or 14, ending as they reached late teens. He didn't have sex with these young girls, but had pajama parties, pillow fights and indulged in 'girl talk', just as he did with Gladys."[42] "As a perpetual youth", Elvis was "attracted to young women",[43] and "Elvis felt comfortable with these adolescent girls" because he "was so insecure ... That's why he needed younger girls."

I think Priscilla herself has said that he lost interest once she was pregnant and only saw her as a mother. Her own parents clearly failed her too. It’s no excuse for how she spoke to Lisa, but I’m not surprised she wasn’t emotionally equipped to be a good mom.

If I recall, Elvis said that he could never have sex with a woman who had children. The implication was that he saw mothers as sacred, much like his own Mother.

huh. interesting. perpetual youth? innocent sleepovers? i feel like i've heard that somewhere before....?

(and yknow its probably tempting to try and read into Lisa's relationship with MJ but its also a sad reality that extremely famous men with their own trauma and unpacked issues victimising others is hardly unique to these two, and yknow there probably IS whole lot of shit to unpack but lets be real "a whole lot of shit to unpack" could also have been the title of this book, it just probably wouldn't have played as well with publishers)
