I was reminiscing on the kdramas I loved but don’t receive enough love, so I decided to make a post for everyone to share their favorite underrated Asian dramas. (Disclaimer: This list veers older since I have been out of the kdrama loop in recent years.)
In the office romcom world I always recommend Gaus Electronics. It's one of those that has both an overarching plot (with an actual plot twist!), plus each episode kinda-sorta functions as a separate episode, dedicated to one of the cast.
And it's just the best kdrama trope collection ever. Genre-bending ofc.
There was one point in our lives where my friends stayed over for a few weeks, and every night we watched the same few episodes of Gaus Electronics. The slapstick is just pretty on point.
Best evil (?) mom character ever. Still waiting for the actress playing the chaebol mom to launch her Korean career properly.
How would you describe it? I loved that there were several layers to the humor in every episode. From the making fun of crappy ads (in the epilogue) to some serious stuff (eg. collaborating with colonizers, xenophobic stereotypes), to slapstick, to lots of word play, lots of references to other kdrama... And that it always felt like it came from a well-meaning place.
I have only seen Live Up To Your Name and Shopping King Louie but I love them both. Everything Seo In Guk does should be watched. The Smile has Left Your Eyes which stars him and Jung So Min (most recently from Love Next Door) remains as one of the most impactful dramas I have ever watched.
Synopsis from Wikipedia: “The series follows high school girl Eun Dan-oh (Kim Hye-yoon) who is a student at a prestigious academy. One day, by chance, she discovers that the world she lives in is a fantasy world of comics. She and everyone else are merely characters in a comic book entitled Secret, all under the authority of their omnipotent and omniscient Writer. Dan-oh is only an extra character and, worse, the Writer gave her a lame set-up: she is engaged to her long-time crush who despises her, and she has a heart disease and is expected to die soon.
Not satisfied with this fate, Dan-oh decides to forge her own destiny by changing the story's plot and finding her own true love.”
