We don't know the specifics but I also can't fault the host for looking at the material and going this is not funny, I'm not doing this. Writing on SNL has been shit for years and years and it's baffling to me that the writing team delivers the material the night before the shoot. This is more reflective of the poor management/showrunning (Lorne Michaels who runs a sweatshop by the looks of it) than the actual host.

There's ways and ways of giving negative feedback though. No one needs to be made to feel worthless unless they're assholes themselves I guess.

but where does it say that they were being assholes about it? I mean bowen clarified that it was more reflective of the stressful working environment than the host themselves. he's clearly emphasizing the story, I doubt that the celebrity went into the writers room and told everyone "I fucking hate this" verbatim. they didn't like it and didn't want to do it so the sketches had to be rewritten and that was the tipping point for the writers who were writing said sketches until wee hours of the morning.

all I'm saying is that this needs to managed a lot better. present your material to the host well in advance and not the night before the show so that if they don't like it and want changes to be made, writers won't have to suffer a nervous breakdown in order to accommodate them.

But saying you don’t like something is a fair statement.

It’s not like they said “this person is a terrible writer, you should fire them.” Or were yelling.

I don’t think the actor or even the writer is wrong. You’re allowed to not like something and you’re allowed to be emotional when your work is criticized.

the thing is, why was that host so fucking rude, knowing well the cast stayed until 4am writing? not liking something is fine, but their reaction was uncalled for.

How was the host rude?

The penchant for some to value politeness over honesty is a real problem.

The host was probably asked what they thought and was kind, not nice.

How do you know if the host wasn't working just as long and hard as the writer's?

Traveling all over the country if not world to promote 1 film, while in pre production for another while balancing a family.

how? because you read a script a few people worked until 4 am, and you said "this fucking sucks"

you can convey your dislike for the script without being so simple-minded and rude.

Yang said that, not the host.

This is what Yang said originally.

This man - this person, this host - made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday before the table read because he hated the ideas,” he responded.

Imagine how bad that had to be for a host to refuse to do the sketch, since SNL has been so unfunny for years now.

Rude gross behavior is nor excused tho.

If you agree to host an SNL show, you must be prepared to do unfunny sketches.
Of course a host could refuse if they find it offensive or something, but you can't expect SNL to be funny, let's be real.
