I disagree, I don’t love all his roles but he’s definitely been great and he definitely commands the screen when he’s in a scene. I feel like whether you love or hate him when you see someone like Leo who is considered a true “movie star” vs someone who is just starting out or isn’t nearly as good you can really tell the difference.
And re Gary Oldman, I’m over this idea that anyone needs to fully “disappear” into a role to be good on screen. I say that as a DDL fan. But I think when people need to completely disappear it can sometimes come off more as dress up or mimicry, and can be lacking on an emotional level since they aren’t tapping into themselves as to how they can empathize with the character. DDL is an exception though lol
I think Leo is fine, but he's not great. His desire to always be seen as a Serious Business Actor has left him stagnated. He takes no genuine risks as an actor. I always consider the best actors to be the ones who can switch adeptly from one genre to another and they're always enjoyable. Can Leo do a comedy and be believable? A musical, an action movie, a girly movie, a Christmas movie, whatever? Show me you're a great actor while doing it in the cheesiest movie, in the silliest, in a bad movie.
