The Bright Eyes have been playing some smaller shows ahead of an album release

The upcoming shows including Riotfest are now cancelled

their subreddit is not surprised, since Conor Oberst has been in a very bad shape at the last shows:

i saw bright eyes in 2004 and remember being shocked seeing conor oberst sitting on a stool, drooling, and nearly falling over for the entire show. i was still a kid, and it was my first time seeing a musician just... actively harming themselves in such a visceral way like that.

that was 20 years ago! i haven't kept up with him or bright eyes at all and was surprised to see they are still touring if he has continued to live in dysfunction like that. i hope he gets it together.

whoa matching early aughts bright eyes memories… i saw them in 2003 a little while after lifted came out, they were my favorite band at the time & it was the first show i’d ever been to with a friend and no adults (we were 15 and panicked on the way in that we’d be turned away bc it was 16+, lmao), and the main thing i remember is that he made it through like an entire bottle of wine during the set. i thought i’d heard he’d cleaned himself up/gotten some help in the years since i stopped keeping up with them but maybe i heard wrong or maybe he relapsed… even though i haven’t listened to them since my angsty teen years it makes me really viscerally sad to read this stuff and hear that he’s been struggling so much and so visibly for so long.

yep. I saw them in 2004 or 2005 in Vegas and he was too drunk to do anything, didn't play any recognizable songs. Most of us sat on the floor confused. Very sad

i saw better oblivion community center in 2019 i believe and he was in a bad place, i remember at the end of the set he smashed up the guitar and everyone including phoebe bridgers looked absolutely shocked. it was hard to watch. i saw bright eyes during their last tour and he seemed better, but as someone who is in recovery i can't imagine the pressure that comes from having to perform and being on the road and how much that must be a trigger.

We all know that’s not the case.
If this was 15 years ago, I could have gotten the inside tea. Their touring drummer had loose lips when he was a baby. He’s “professional” now though.

I saw him back in 2022 and he walked off about halfway through and had to be talked into coming back on, he played the whole set but was clearly not doing well. I really hope he gets the help he needs

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Conor Oberst has been a sloppy mess for the last few shows, right?

Considering he's on stage talking about committing suicide, I'd say that's definitely the reason... ?

Another commenter mentioned how bad Conor was doing just a couple days ago and I mentioned that it was poor timing with the upcoming album. I genuinely hope he gets help
