I'm shopping for a blue state to live in when I leave Florida in a few years. Vermont seems nice. So does Minnesota. I'm worried about surviving the cold in either state, though. Maryland also seems nice. I'd LOVE to go back to Oregon or live in Washington but I'm not sure I can afford either state.

Ha! It's that level of preparation that says nope, definitely too cold. Having to put on that many things to leave my house is stressful. And then depending on your mode of transport you've got to take some of them off to be comfortable, in the car, on public transit then put it all back on again.

It depends when you lived there because I feel like winter there when I visit for holidays isn’t nearly as brutal as it used to be when I was growing up there. The last bad winter was during the polar vortex 😮‍💨

invest in the proper wardrobe and you'll be fine! in my experience people from warm climates get turned off from cold locations because they visit wearing h&m jackets or whatever fast fashion equivalent winter gear and they might as well just wear a bikini. having the right gear makes a world of difference, i work outside in below zero temps all winter and my seasonal wardrobe is expensive but the quality means i'm comfortable and i very rarely have to replace anything even with years of heavy use

I love it, but Maryland is expensive in the blue areas, and the red areas are cheap for a reason. Minnesota and Vermont would definitely be more expensive if it weren’t for the weather. Delaware is a good option for affordable blue state with not-extreme weather. The northern part is basically a suburb of Philly, plus you have beaches.

People are mentioning proper Winter clothes & supplies for your home, but didn't mention stuff for the car. Have a blanket, snacks, water, an ice scraper for the windows, a shovel to dig out the car if it gets stuck, cat litter to put under the wheels for traction. Google "What to have in your car for the Winter" for other suggestions.

I moved from Tennessee to Michigan, and the weather was definitely something to get used to. But it's worth it to actually experience four seasons. Invest in a warm wardrobe. Layers are important. Also, get some good snow boots. If you're renting at a complex, they should handle the snow plowing. But you'll need to clear your own car. Even a broom works in a pinch. But get a snow remover with a long handle. If you're buying a house, consider a snow blower or a snow pusher on wheels. Keep an emergency kit in your car - blankets, gloves, granola bars, hand warmers, etc.

Take care in rural areas in blue states (aka the affordable areas). Confederate flags, Trump support, and racism can be very visible / overt.

for sure, I have no desire to live in rural areas anywhere, but Florida is just... ugh. I live in Lee County. As in Robert E.

Washington is beautiful but it's very gray and wet and that can get to you.

I moved from Cali to WA and lived there for years before I moved back. I hated it. The constant rain and clouds and the people and bad food were all too much.

I lived in Portland for ten years, the rain didn't bother me at all. I loved it in that area but it's v. v. expensive

I hated Portland. Lived in Vancouver for years but worked in Portland a lot. I don't miss the traffic or the dumb, slow drivers.

lol Portland driving is an absolute BREEZE compared to what I dealt with living in Miami. Like the traffic there is way lighter than most metro areas I've lived in
