If he's really uninterested in being a dad, the unfortunate truth is that it might be better for the child if he's less involved. Forcing men to step up when they don't want to rarely results in children growing up with loving, supportive fathers.

Hopefully with time he'll be able to work through some of these issues for both his benefit and his son's, but he has to want to do that, and it doesn't sound like he does. Unfortunate all around.

It can be easier said than done. My brother is definitely a better father to his kids than the dad we had but I still see him repeating some of the same mistakes my dad made. It can be frustrating to witness.
