Kate Winslet says it's not brave when actresses don't wear makeup and/or show their bodies on camera.

“That’s not f*cking brave. I’m not an ex-postmaster fighting for justice, I’m not in the Ukraine. I’m doing a job that matters to me."https://t.co/PPc8nteiIS

I think there is braveness to allowing yourself to be vulnerable. I personally wouldn’t call a nude celebrity brave, but I also don’t think anyone is comparing a nude celebrity’s “braveness” to a Ukrainian soldier.

Attitudes like this are incredibly damaging and regressive. If we compared everything against it's extreme, no one would have a sense of accomplishment or self-worth for anything. I actually have a friend with this kind of attitude and it's incredibly frustrating because she doesn't allow herself grace for anything. Like, everything she does that's positive isn't good enough because there is always someone else out there in the world who is able to do more. And everything negative in her life is never that bad because there's always someone else out there in the world who has it worse.

Yes Kate, you're not on the front lines fighting against fascists for your homeland. But maybe, just maybe, showing people what a 48 year old body actually looks like in a world where everything is manipulated to look absolutely perfect is a different, and definitely worthy type of courage.

I fully agree that these kinds of comparisons are self-defeating (people can care about multiple things/there are many types of bravery), and that vulnerability and openness actually do take a ton of courage. Though I also think the way actresses get asked about this is super shady so I get hating the being called that word specifically (Kate is messy but she's also had her body critiqued by the press from a very young age). If they asked "what did you gain from this scene/what do you hope audiences will get from it" then there's more room to talk about how we all really need to see more unretouched, aging bodies and faces.
