"On retirement: "I retired from the formula of the pop star a very long time ago. I stopped focusing on what’s popular, and began focusing on the qualities that get better with time and experience. Good music and strong messages will never retire.""

I love this. I do think only people who've already made it can lean into that, but I definitely think it's the way more interesting artistic approach. Compared to say Katy Perry, who's been chasing trends and past success.... well, it's certainly the better choice.

Honestly Beyoncé and Gaga are like. The only pop stars of their era who are able to just fuck off and do whatever they want to nowadays like that. Fitting that they collabed on each other's projects. Mmm mmm Honey B!

yeuppppp! every entertainer who’s focused on maintaining their career & image has that moment when they transcend from pop star to icon/~real artist. and it’s usually after a careful but calculated (which i don’t think is a bad thing) move towards what truly inspires them. Beyoncé’s moment was from 4 to self-titled, and Gaga’s was A Star Is Born. like you said, fitting that they collaborated :)

"The music is enough. The fans from all over the world became the visual. We all got the visual on tour. We then got more visuals from my film."

pffft, whatever! i'm gonna yell "where are the renaissance visuals" at you the same way i yell "mindhunter season 3!" at david fincher, lol.

look, i was never in the beyhive. i enjoyed the music from afar and the visuals, miss m'am, were a huge part of that. like it or not, you've established yourself a visual artist in the same way madonna was. that's awesome. and then you get to your most EXCITING work, which enthralled even a casual listener like me, and deny the people this big part of the artistic package? it's a bummer. i went to renaissance tour, i saw the merch design, we KNOW you have a crazy archive for that album, we just want to see it. give me a coffee table book at least. UGH.

I believe genres are traps that box us in and separate us. I’ve experienced this for 25 years in the music industry. Black artists, and other artists of color, have been creating and mastering multiple genres, since forever."

this is really nice, though

She’s holding onto the visuals because everyone paid The Gift dust lol. It’s by far her most ambitious and beautiful visual album and no one cared because it was only on disney plus lol. We’re all being punished.

I genuinely think she just filmed a bunch of short videos with different outfits and locations and called it a day. I don't think there's much more than what we've already seen.

My dream is that she will release everything with the third album and it'll be edited and woven together to perfection. But in reality? I think some of what she wanted to do was not fully feasible at the time. I can see her chopping something entirely because it wasn't going to be fully realized. And the missing part is probably like 10% of it.
