eta: Kirsten Dunst also mentioned how her agent told her that Harvey thinks she doesn't like him. Cause at the time she had 3 films under Miramax and she was like "So what? I’m not kissing his ass!’ I always knew he was kind of gross, even my young teenage self knew that. I just thought, ‘I’ll keep my distance.’".

I read parts of the oral history of Girl, Interrupted and I didn't get that feel? Winona was looking forward to working with Angelina and forming a friendship but that didn't exactly happen the way she wanted. Because Angelina took a method approach to get into character therefore she kept her distance from Winona and the cast. But aside from that it seems pretty cordial cause she thanked Winona in her Oscar speech.

Goes to show you that it might not have been just a case of being blacklisted just for shoplifting. Knowing what we know now about Weinstein, it wouldn't be surprising at all if he used the shoplifting as an excuse to get the entire industry to blacklist her for daring to "offend" him and saying no to casting couch practices. It's a believable excuse when you consider how much clothes are lent/rented/sponsored by fashion houses. The interesting is, one of the big brands she stole from wrote the entire thing off and even hired her to model in one of their fashion shows--if I remember correctly--but we don't see this news making headlines do we?

I'm glad that Winona is acknowledging her foothold on the industry at the time and recognizing how much worse it could've gotten for her if she wasn't already so well known and beloved by the public. So many newcomers do not have the power/financial security to say no.

yes, Marc Jacobs! His brand was one of the ones she shoplifted and then he had her star in their next campaign and even put out a Free Winona t shirt iirc, he's openly acknowledged how the publicity around the shoplifting actually boosted his profile

(and to his credit, he's stood by her ever since and they are friends - she's starred in multiple other Marc Jacobs campaigns over the years, most recently in 2022)
