Winona Ryder loves working with the young co-stars she’s been given over the last several years, but there is one aspect of them she isn’t exactly a fan of: their diminished love of film.

I don’t feel like actors (especially those whose images lean more towards movie star or celebrity than thespian) not loving film is anything that new though. You can tell when they get asked for their favorite films and they struggle or they name four not great movies. They just like in the best case scenario acting or worst case scenario celebrity and don’t actually like film. It is nice when we do get the rare who clearly actually loves film as a whole like Jenna for sure.

I feel like the true cinephiles gravitate towards other roles in the film industry. Even the worst directors who make movies that have a 1% on rottentomatoes tend to actually be passionate about film. Now that I think about it I would love to know how other positions behind the cameras fare.

That’s exactly how I feel too especially being a “relic” of the time (mine was Y2K as if it was where I was left at). It’s giving Blade Runner vibes for me. Relatable tbh. Bless her.

Yeah it’s all brain rot now that everything’s barely functioning properly in our society running by adult toddlers with bad temper tantrums over literally everything little or big 😭

the attitude towards any actor who does a letterbox four and says something made before 1990 or in a non-English language is utter contempt. I want my actors to take their craft seriously!

becaue of streaming, Gen Z and Gen Alpha missed out on the formative experience of there being nothing on tv.

A bored twelve year old sees a gorgeous 1950s actor on TCM and then it sends you down a lifetime of having strong opinions about socially-conscious spy dramas.

i think about this a lot! there's so many favorite movies i probably wouldn't have seen if they weren't played constantly on TNT or TBS (Back to the Future or Overboard for example.)

also Nick at Nite's Block Party helped me become obsessed w I Love Lucy lol

Exactly on the point of deep dives. Imagine only knowing Debbie Reynolds from Halloweentown. All that forgotten legacy. I used to watch AMC and TCM so much as a kid and teen.

I was sick at home by myself when I was about 12 years old. I was lying on the couch and flipped to one of the fancier basic cable channels that showed artsy movies, which is how I ended up watching Empire of the Sun and The Last Emperor back to back.

I remember she was once asked something like - what movie would people be surprised to learn that you've never seen? And she was like - there isn't one, I've seen all the movies that people should see lol. A true cinephile!

I've loved movies my whole life but I can understand why some people prefer different kinds of storytelling. It is a little strange to me when ACTORS don't like movies though. Like MBB saying she doesn't even watch movies and Tom Holland never having heard of Pedro Almodóvar is wild to me.

Copying this response for when my boss asks me if there's anything I haven't checked for my next work submission.

I never heard of Pedro Almodóvar & I'm a LOT older than Tom Holland.

Are you a professional actor who makes films for a living though? I would assume that if you're in the filmmaking business you would have at least a baseline knowledge of famous filmmakers, but maybe not. Of course Tom Holland also thought that Martin Scorsese shouldn't speak on Marvel movies since he's never made one lmao.

I feel her. I’m not a cinephile, but there is a shift in how younger generations find entertainment. They would rather watch a bunch of short videos than a full length movie. It is what it is, but I agree with her that it feels like something is being lost.
