This is genuinely such a shitty thing to do to everyone else involved in the film - all of that time and effort wasted. Obviously we can't know exactly what happened, but I feel like people don't generally have bad things to say about working with Todd Haynes! Ugh.

A high budgeted Hollywood gay detective film!!! BRUH. I NEED IT LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW. that’d be so cool. These scenes of NC-17 nature won’t be any necessary if it’s relevant to the plot. Make it quite tasteful.

bummer. I don’t think this would further hurt his chances of wining an Oscars for the Joker sequel. That would be a dumb reason to quit at last minute if true.

They can't find ANYONE to take his place? They can't re-arrange the shooting schedule so that it backloads that character's scenes? They couldn't re-plan the NC-17 scenes to be just R-rated? Or does the plot somehow absolutely hinge on seeing Joaquin Phoenix's butthole taking 3 fingers in prep for penetration? Did Dennis Reynolds write this movie?
