I like to think he died so Mary could have better plotlines (at least until they were obsessed with her having a new love interest)

I still think she and Tom should have gotten together, it was comfort at first but then became a passion - scandal and running the estate = true love.

It's funny in a way watching season 3 of Downton because multiple people wanted out at once and then everyone else just seems to want to be on it for perpetuity as long as they keep making Downton stuff. I guess it's a good gig if you just want to stay employed and don't have grandiose visions of being an A++ lister (Jessica Brown Findlay). It worked out better for Dan Stevens than for her for sure.

Also, I wonder if they were influenced for that scene by City of Angels (almost 30 years later and I still loathe that movie for that one scene)
