I love swimming esp in swimming pool. But to head dive into the bottom of the pool… even if the numbers were there that it was supposed to be deep where you wouldn’t get hit right away. Omg. New Fear unlocked and that is just depressing

I grew up in a place that had a neighborhood pool. It wasn't a gated community in any way, in fact we'd have to walk or drive to go there. Us kids knew a special shortcut via neighbors yards and that is not the point.

One of the biggest things one kid could do was pass the swim test. It was a thing. Jump off the diving board in the deep end and tread water for 10 minutes. And then swim a lap back and forth. A lifeguard - a teen, probably - noted it and it was approved.

Real talk, it allowed me to play Sharks and Minnows with my neighbors and friends.

It was a major life moment.

But so was that 'NO SOLO BATHING' sign and me asking what it meant. Early 90's. And it's still good signage - don't swim alone.

A dumb cramp or a moment of panic can result in the worse thing in a pool.
