One of the greatest things about the Internet is that we can be connected to people far away and see how they actually live, rather than depending on the media. I'm not sure of her age but Pepperridge Farms remembers all the "starving children in Africa" commercials (never a particular country, just "Africa"), you NEVER saw cities, and the only countries people knew by name was Kenya and Ethiopia. If you wanted to visit you were immediately referred to safaris, and if you saw ANY area in Africa on TV it was extremely rural. This wasn't even that long ago; we're talking 80s and 90s here. So yes, while things are a LOT better, there's still a lot of general ignorance out there.
