Thank you for this, I meant to record the broadcast and forgot. Groff's acceptance speech was so good; I've followed his career since Spring Awakening so I'm stupidly happy for him.
There are always good heartfelt acceptance speeches at the Tonys but Jonathan Groff’s was just so sincere. He reminds of Lin-Manuel Miranda in the sense that you can tell they genuinely love the theater so much. Their love for theater is just so bare naked and unabashed.
Illinoise, Merrily, The Outsiders were my top three performances BUT! Stereophonic was cool and Water For Elephants was impressive!
Cabaret (yes Cabaret, Cabaret AT the Kit-Kat Club is a ridiculous title and none of us should use it)… anyways i want to know what the fuck British critics were smoking bc it’s bad. they need to extend formal apologies to Alan Cumming and Joel Grey
so much of this production of Cabaret seems to indulge in this exaggerated ugliness on purpose, but Redmayne just exaggerates to the point of breaking the whole show lol
the Emcee to me does read as a bit creepy, but ultimately there is a complicated bit of character work to pull it off
This season was just kinda meh for me. I know that Broadway is in general still recouping its losses post-COVID, but it just seems like their isn't much original stuff going on. The musicals are adaptations of other works if they're not a revival. There still is original stuff going on, of course - I am really interested in Suffs - but nothing much new swinging for the fences.
1. Why did it take sooo long for Jonathan Groff to win? Like he should have won for Spring awakening and Hamilton...also should have won when he performed Queen on Glee.
2. Its so amazing to see Daniel Ratcliffe and theother HP kids survive the perils of child stardom.
Jonathan lost to his fellow Hamilton castmate Daveed Diggs in 2016 and to David Hyde Pierce in 2007 (tho that should have gone to Raul Esparza for Company let's be real!)
Someone interviewing Groff after the award mentioned a proshot and his facial expressions.... I think it's the closest thing we'll get to a confirmation for a bit 😂
Also, there's a bit in the show where Frank (Groff) is pretending to accept a Tony and the audience went a bit wild during yesterday's performance before the awards ceremony. Here's a clip of Groff's reaction... I'm sure the audience will be even more enthusiastic tomorrow.

And he still sounds like a muppet when he sings. I can't believe this man keeps getting booked for musicals smh.

He accidentally was channeling his Jupiter Ascending performance from what I can tell LMAO.
