this was basically the comment i was going to make. i saw superman returns in theaters and there was a guy in front who when superman is going to die and then it's all emotional in the hospital, pulled out his cell to text whoever about picking up him because the movie was almost done and i was like dude...I know it's not the best film, but let me at least try to suspend belief and get swept up in the scene w/o your phone nonsense...

It's frustrating and I'm not surprised it still happens in 2024. Hollywood barely tries to hide the double standard of still letting straight people play queer roles all the time (you can usually tell by their face when they kiss a same-sex actor) while gatekeeping queer people because it's "not believable".

I just remember how the kissing in that movie, from all the pairings, felt all the same and very choreographed. Nothing ever felt passionate or chemistry-induced despite the dramatic music telling me it was.

this may be controversial but I think its because of intimacy coordinators. its a relatively new thing on movie sets but I do think it contributes to making scenes sterile. It's like another person looking over your shoulder which might make an actor hesitant.

don't get me wrong, I don't think intimacy coordinators are bad or should be eliminated but rather that the role is new and has year to go before they figure out what works best.
