I like both versions of the song but it makes me cringe because one the narrator is kind of pathetic both songs and two as a middle aged woman whose marriage blew up because of a Jolene I understand where they’re both coming from and I feel so much secondhand embarrassment for the me that loved that garbage man
There is a lot of rage and insecurity in Beyoncé's version while Dolly's is more pleadingly insecure. Both make a ton of sense and TBH, I think too many are factoring in Beyoncé actually being cheated on. This isn't a diary entry, it's a song.
IMO this perspective makes it even sadder. Like you saw Tina put up with all of Matthew's bullshit and then decide to take up with the same type of man and put up with all his bullshit?
I've heard that said about the album in general, like Protector feels like it's more about her relationship with her mother (and perhaps to a degree about her own kids but more about Tina)
Also Alligator Tears, apparently her mom was Catholic but raised the kids in Matthew's church so "you said change religions now I spend Sundays with you"
she had to change the lyrics a little at least. It would have been an awkward cover for her to be singing about a super white woman being the woman she's so envious of. and I still maintain that "TYRANT" as the companion song (Dolly appears in both) brings all the vulnerability "JOLENE" is lacking
I also kind of vibe with the theory that "JOLENE" is her channeling her mother too, especially since the song right after is "DAUGHTER" and deals with what her father's infidelity

“Jolene, I’m a queen” not with those lyrics honey

Beyoncé’s version was more of her peacocking over a man who didn’t deserve to be peacocked over.
