IMO this perspective makes it even sadder. Like you saw Tina put up with all of Matthew's bullshit and then decide to take up with the same type of man and put up with all his bullshit?

I've heard that said about the album in general, like Protector feels like it's more about her relationship with her mother (and perhaps to a degree about her own kids but more about Tina)

Also Alligator Tears, apparently her mom was Catholic but raised the kids in Matthew's church so "you said change religions now I spend Sundays with you"

It makes sense to me, didnt she say renaissance was an ode to her uncle? I feel like cowboy carter is an ode to her mom-the original album title, oh Louisiana, daughter, Jolene, protector and alligator tears like the other user pointed out
