the Avery Rule was because he used to stand in front of Martin Brodeur, goaltender of the New Jersey Devils, and basically wave his arms and annoy him to distract him. He's a bit of a polarizing figure even among Rangers fans. Most of the antagonistic guys on the ice are very nice off-ice(see Brad Marchand) but Avery was obnoxious off-ice as well. Personally, he always struck me as someone who was more interested in being famous, who happened to be good at hockey so he used that as a means to that end. He also interned at Vogue magazine, and keeps trying to break into acting. I think he might be on good terms with Chris Nolan because he's appeared in several of his films in small roles.

tldr: this is a HUUUGE downgrade for an Olsen.
