Eh. The UK and Broadway press have been praising the play and the cast (Tom included) for the most part. So it's not the flop people are thinking it is.
Maybe it's a "Hollywood press wanted another Leo Dicaprio copy for Romeo" thing. Because Romeo has been a pathetic bitch, what are they talking about?

I'm happy for Francesca tho. Obviously, she's a star and the racists can cry about it.

To be fair, I think Leo really nailed that aspect of his character, too, we were just kids who saw a fuckwit smoking and writing bullshit in a journal and were like “damn, this guy is on his shit”

I haven't seen this movie in years, so you may be right.

Romeo has always been a wet blanket. I love how media thinks by trashing one actor you can lift another. No you can lift both together. But also Tom is not a good actor.

And the amount of reviews over a tedious play is interesting.

vindication!!! personally this whole thing really made me think differently of him. i wasn't expecting him to say anything to defend francesca (it could very well be that she asked him not to) but he could have at least closed the comment section when he posted photos of her. if he has time to post photos of zendaya he could do that

i also think he's at best a fine actor, nothing more than that. and nowadays directors are more likely to go for other actors in his age range who have proven themselves. if you want critical acclaim, you have actors like paul mescal or josh o'connor. if you want commercial performance you could go for timothee chalamet (i know uncharted made profit but i feel like it barely had any impact, unlike wonka).

Imma say wonka had very little impact besides the memes as well like I was blown away by how well it didn’t bc I heard fck all about it

this is going to sound pretentious or whatever but tom doesn't come across to me as someone who's necessarily a huge film lover and i think it really shows in his choices (and in interviews). i don't necessarily think he HAS to be super knowledgeable about film or anything but i do think there's a lack of curiosity in comparison to his peers (not all of his peers i'm sure but the peers you mentioned like mescal and o'connor, etc.) who make more interesting choices and actively cares about seeking out working with the right director, etc. i really think he would have been far better off attaching himself to smaller indies from first time directors when he wasn't working on spider-man instead of working with the russo's or doing ya/video game adaptations and now he has far more competition in terms of roles (although idk if him and paul are really up for the same things but he and chalamet definitely are and chalamet has the box office numbers now AND the prestige).

yeah he didn't even know who almodovar was and allegedly he passed on the hamnet adaptation once chloe zhao replaced sam mendes

happy for francesca getting raves at the very least. i wonder if tom would have been better off picking a musical to go back on stage with. i don't think choosing a jamie lloyd production as his first role back on-stage is a bad one, people tend to be mixed on his productions but for the most part he seems to really get the most of his actors, but maybe shakespear and this particular version of r&j isn't doing him any favors. but then again this is one review out of what seems like a couple more positive ones? so who knows.

speaking of romeo and juliet i've always been kind of sad that this one with jessie buckley and josh o'connor had to be cancelled due to covid but i'm glad they managed to film it at the very least:
their chemistry was sooooooo good. so natural.
