I would pay off all my bills and have some left over to go on a nice holiday. The smart thing to do would be to buy a house, but that still not enough in this market lmaooo

This is not an uncommon response for somebody who's lived in poverty for a long time. Generally some people who experienced poverty will be overly cautious with their spending even when they become well-off later in life, while some will tend to spend money very quickly.

If I got this much money, I'd put it all towards buying a house or an apartment.

I've seen this and experienced this with smaller amounts of money. I'm still trying to retrain myself.

I was reading about this somewhere - the suggestion was that after so much time being poor, for some folks it brings a form of anxiety to actually having money. Like they're so used to not having any and what little they get disappearing immediately on necessities etc, that when they actually have any to spare they almost feel like they have to spend it before it evaporates.

My dad had a sail boat. He loved it when he got it but growing it was not docked that close so it was a drive to get to it & then it started having issues like windows leaking and getting water in the cabin so we'd have to go up with the shop vac to clean it out. My mom was thrilled when he finally agreed that he wasn't really able to use it anymore and they ended up being able to sell it to some guy up in NY who wanted it for a father/son summer project of fixing up the boat.

A saying goes; the best two days of a boat owner's life is they day they buy the boat, and the day they sell the boat.

With a $75k check I would pay off my credit cards, open up one of those investment accounts people talk about, then move to NYC or SoCal 🙂‍↔️

But I also don’t even make $75k in a year so I’d be happy with just that 😭
