Mike Schur Knows 'Parks and Rec' Would Have Seemed 'Naive' Post-Trump

Really enjoyed my conversation with ‘Parks and Rec’ co-creator Mike Schur about the show’s legacy, its best behind-the-scenes moments, and why it could never be the same today. https://t.co/K6i5rSK2Hv

It was naive back then, too. Like, Leslie had a hard-on for Biden and worshiped Clinton… not exactly different from the post-Trump centrists of today.

Idk anyone who watched it for the political aspect. It was a more upbeat/less awkward version of The Office. The best scenes were the ones that had nothing to do with their jobs (except for the ice rink scene when they campaigned… that was excellent).

He loved playing Mose, just hating growing the beard for it, which he was made to do initially. Eventually, they just glued a fake one on!

It was already naive in a centrist believing the best of people and the world and having faith in the system kind of way. But at the time it wasn't something I found offensively naive, I suppose. I liked it and found it genuinely very funny a lot of the time. It was very "Hope and Change" Obama like.

Post-Trump election and current political landscape? It's just pretty laughable to me. Definitely very centrist in a way that I now roll my eyes at. I could never rewatch it now.

I also think back to some of my professors at the time Trump got elected who thought my fears about the trajectory of our country were unfounded and overblown because "our checks and balances" and "institutions" would protect us.

haha ok

I hate when people still talk about checks and balances. Yeah if our system worked the way it should that would matter but there’s overwhelming evidence that it doesn’t so enough!

me either! but that is because I am not from the US so I had no idea what it was really like over there.

I do kind of think Park does a good job of reflecting the privileged sort of democrat thinking from that time, tho? The ones that could afford to be hopeful
