Language matters; saying "At that point, I really didn’t know if I wanted to be a mother," is a LONG cry from "I was thinking about terminating my pregnancy." JFC.

The whole article is very sloppy, but I think discussing with one's partner "are we going to keep it?" is close enough to "thinking about terminating."

You're a good person giving this OP more credit than they deserve, IMO. A lot of first time moms think "Am I sure? Am I cut out to be a mom?" even when the pregnancy is wanted and welcome. If she had said "We briefly considered other options but ultimately decided to have her" it would be a whole different conversation.

Wow the timing of this is on point because my friend just told me she might be pregnant and that was the one thing I told her to be careful about cuz she doesn't use protection. She comes from a lower income background and has worked so hard to get into PA school which is as difficult to get into as Med school now. She ended up getting in and is a month away from classes.

I can't imagine going through a grueling courseload on top of dealing with being pregnant and then going into a new work force while having a newborn! WHAT? I feel like she might want to have an abortion but her religious background and family will convince her not to.

Best of luck to your friend!

Your friend sounds very intelligent and capable, and I really hope not to come across as patronizing, but there are many different options for birth control, and if someone does not want to get pregnant, they can significantly reduce their chances by using just one of those methods. (2 is even better!)

Once again, good vibes to your friend. May what she wants to happen come to be!!

It's honestly terrifying how many girls I know that think that the pull out method is good enough. Like this is men we're talking about... you don't want to be permanently attached to some guy because you accidentally had a kid with them.

I even told her (because she definitely wants kids at some point) that she wants to protect herself against STDs because some of them risk making you infertile.

Whatever choice she makes, I'll support her.

Love that she's talking about this very, very real reality of life.

I had an abortion as a married lady with a child. AMA.

Do people close to you know? If so, how did they react? I feel like society’s expectation is that ~of course~ you’d welcome every pregnancy once you’re married, but it’s absolutely still a choice to be made

Some friends do. Family does not, though I will tell my kids when they are older.

Not that I needed an excuse for an abortion, but I actually terminated between my two daughters. I got pregnant 14 months after my first, and the timing was just not it for us for a lot of different reasons (very complicated first birth, plus it was right at the peak of the pandemic). I think my family would not have understood why someone who wanted a second baby desperately would terminate a badly-timed second pregnancy.
