yeah, I did not really have acne (just a few pimples here and there) when I was a teenager, but it started to get really bad for 2 years when I was 22. It sucked, the only thing that helped was accutane. I really felt shitty in more professional settings, because it was not "normal" at that age. But acne is shit at any age tbh.

Same, I never struggled with acne at all when I was a teenager, only to get hit with cystic acne in my 20’s. And even to this day I still get spots coming back whenever I try coming off birth control, although not the very painful cystic ones any more at least, but birth control has really been the only solution to clearing my skin up completely.

Recently I tried again with coming off the pill, and I gave it well over it a year following online advice about how long it takes to get things back in synch, but I had to give up in the end and go back on it because I was so sick of having spots all over my chin at my age

omg YES! My skin was super clear as a teen but in my early twenties I got some really bad acne and it made me feel so vulnerable, people would stare at it sometimes as if my skin was dirty or something, it felt quite dehumanizing.

A similar thing happened to me. Other than rosacea, my skin was fairly clear through middle and high school, but I suddenly developed this extremely painful cystic acne all over my jaw and cheeks in my early 20s. I followed all the advice on r/skincareaddiction back then like using Cetaphil, CeraVe etc... and my skin only got worse.

Turns out those products, although widely loved and often recommended, are pretty horrible for cystic/hormonal acne. The only thing that cleared up my skin was spearmint tea, of all things lol docs often prescribe it in the form of spironolactone for women with PCOS (which I also tried, but for some reason it didn't work as well as the tea). After like 2 years of endless agony (deep, throbbing cysts), a month of spearmint tea completely cleared my face up and now I only break out around my period, but I've still got scarring from those CeraVe days!

I remember noticing the acne scars specifically in the scene when he’s hooking up with Zoe Saldana’s character’s roommate and actually found it refreshing. I had what you would consider “normal” hormonal acne but was a chronic picker and you can see the scarring certain lights.

I’ve had acne since I was a teen. Only when I was about 26 did I try something that actually worked. I was put on tretinoin and it was brutal. It made my lips crack and bleed and I had weird scaly skin on my legs. It worked though and while I do still get acne, it’s not as bad. I could try the medication again, but I’d rather not.

People don’t talk about acne scars though. I was dismissed by the dermatologist when I asked about mine.

i agree regarding scarring. i've been fighting acne and mental problems that come with it half of my life. now acne is gone replaced instead by scars that still undermine my confidence and fuck up self esteem.
and it seems like the only solution is burning upper layers of skin which also could go a thousand ways wrong?

Look up hyaluronic acid injections and see if anyone does them near you.

Are these effective? I did like 5 sessions of microneedling to traumatise and force the skin to heal and they did nothing for my acne scars. And they’re not even that bad, like obviously I dislike them but they don’t affect my confidence much, so I was really disappointed that I saw zero difference.

My acne wasn’t so bad as a teenager and I came out of those years with good skin but then I got severe seborrheic dermatitis in my early 20s. Then dealt with lithium acne followed by bouts of cystic acne which have continued into my 30s along with melasma so…anybody who ridicules or dismisses skin issues, scarring or its emotional impact can enjoy boils on both their buttocks.

I wish more doctors did their jobs and mentioned that most birth control causes melasma bc they don't and they need to.

That's one thing I thought was interesting about the show Young Royals. You would never see a lead in a US-based teen show with acne. But that clearly did nothing to diminish the popularity of the show or how much people like Edvin Ryding. It's a dumb reason not to cast someone.
