That's not exactly news, or a new trend

I mean she moved to France in her early 20's and said that's the best time in her life in an interview promoting Mother play (Paula Vogel) so she knows!

No, but it has certainly gotten worse merger after merger, leaving us with fewer production and distribution models.

You mean countries that aren't American do things that we do and are able to do it BETTER?! 😲

As a counterpoint, I think A24 has found success with more experimental filmmaking. I've personally loved a lot of their recent releases.

A24 is decent but a lot of their movies, maybe the majority, end up feeling kind of hollow to me. I think they often feel like they’re doing all the things that should happen to make a good movie but something is missing & the movie is like, 15-20% dumber than it needs to be. That’s how I felt about Midsommar, The Green Knight, and even Everything Everywhere All at Once-they all just weren’t as tight as they could have been.

I hated EEAAO - in so many ways it felt like a douchebro movie from the aughts.... it also gave me a panic attack so I'm biased; it was too much flash. And I don't like action movies or movies with this much soulless flash, it felt like.

The performances were great though, but i don't like JLC.

I think it had a lot of good stuff going on & I actually didn't get a "bro" vibe from it at all. But it was really unsubtle at times, and felt juvenile at other times. With the cast and concept they had, I think it could've just been so much better. And I think one reason movies like that aren't is that the environment they're being produced in doesn't really reward subtlety or thoughtfulness. No one is holding each other creatively accountable!

I am not usually super into French cinema (I'm European), so I haven't seen it yet, but looking at the movies I've given the highest rating lately, Zone of interest and Godzilla Minus One are both up there. Though, Zone of interest is partially a US film? So, let's just say, foreign language films.

She’s right. I think the really alarming thing is that Hollywood isn’t even good at being Hollywood anymore. Like the blockbusters, the things big studios are supposed to excel at, aren’t even of watchable quality. I tried watching Barbie on a plane the other day and it was so bad and half-assed I literally had to turn it off 2/3 of the way through

I tried with all my might to stay focused on watching it, but 3/4 of the way in I was just so BORED and started playing with my phone.

A week or so later I watched Leave the World Behind by myself and I was on the edge of my seat, yelling at the TV, full on invested. So I know the issue wasn’t solely my “Ooh! 🐿️!” attention span. 😂
