Did they give Cher 2 million then? Or did they do this to be petty? lol.

I don't understand what's the importance of that hall of fame. How every year impactful artists are new inductees? They should have been in it a long time ago, no?

Pretty much everyone thinks it's a joke, tbh, and it's very American-centric. Like...it means nothing to people outside of America. Ozzy not being in as a solo act when he's been eligible since '05 is already ridiculous, and they snub legacy acts all the time. They HATE prog rock groups too. The only reason Rush and Yes got in was because fans pestered them for years to put them on the ballot, but hugely important acts like King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer haven't ever been nominated.

I've heard the museum is great though, and the inductions do make for a fun night.

The only requirement they have is that an act is eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first recording. Instead of getting older acts in they seem to prioritize newly eligible ones. I think they’re more concerned with selling tickets or something at this point. Bands like Foo Fighters, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam all went in their first or second year of eligibility iirc and pioneering bands like MC5 have been on the ballot for ages and are getting in as musical excellence instead of the regular performers category.

It’s literally whatever act a bunch of old white men want to honor. There is no rhyme or reason to it.

Ozzy's induction almost confused me but then I remember he had already been inducted with Black Sabbath.

Watching No Doubt last night I noticed that they are eligible for consideration. So are the Spice Girls, Britney, The White Stripes off the top of my head.

Eligibility begins once your first album turns 25. Britney and White Stripes's debut turn 25 this year (never realized they both debuted in 1999!).

Mary winning over Mariah and Sade is confusing to me tbh. Glad to see Tribe get in though and the hall putting in MC5, Big Mama and Dionne in the side categories since they probably wouldn’t get the votes otherwise unfortunately.

Sade is a band, so they were up against Kool & The Gang.

Mary getting in before Mariah is not surprising, though. I think Mary is more respected. Something Mariah cried about (to Questlove maybe?, I forget who told that story recently), back in 1996.

God Questlove always has a story.

I didn’t realize Mary was more respected. It always seemed like Mariah has been celebrated more as a vocalist across many generations and I figured she got more respect for being the sole lyricist of most of her works as well.
