Mary winning over Mariah and Sade is confusing to me tbh. Glad to see Tribe get in though and the hall putting in MC5, Big Mama and Dionne in the side categories since they probably wouldn’t get the votes otherwise unfortunately.

Sade is a band, so they were up against Kool & The Gang.

Mary getting in before Mariah is not surprising, though. I think Mary is more respected. Something Mariah cried about (to Questlove maybe?, I forget who told that story recently), back in 1996.

I didn’t realize Mary was more respected. It always seemed like Mariah has been celebrated more as a vocalist across many generations and I figured she got more respect for being the sole lyricist of most of her works as well.

In the early days of their careers, Mary was more respected as an RnB act while Mariah was seen as a pop act. Mariah's ex Tommy Mottola had a big hand in stifling her creative endeavors.
