Are the days of 100 episodes over for streaming shows? Alex Kurtzman weighs in

#StarTrek fans have talked a lot about the amount of episodes in a season in the new series. I asked Alex Kurtzman if any Trek series will ever reach 100 episodes again and he broke down the complicated state of streaming for me: https://t.co/ARQKg3Pobn

DEATH TO SHORT TV SHOW SEASONS. I am so fucking sick of them. 10 episodes is not enough. 8 episodes is ABSOLUTELY not enough. The storytelling suffers, the characterization TANKS. I'm sick of TV seasons being an 8 hour movie. I miss single episode stories. I miss slice of life episodes where nothing much happens but you get to know the characters. It is the biggest problem with modern Star Trek, actually. Kurtzman is a huge part of the problem. SNW has been all right but still is fundamentally a bummer of a show. They're all a fucking bummer.

People check out because they don’t want to wait a year (or more, looking at you Apple and Disney) for 6-10 more episodes. If they want to do 10 episodes it should be every 6 months. How do they expect the audience to really remember a show they haven’t seen for 10 months or more?

I hate the short seasons 8 or 10 episodes and then you have to wait 2 years for the next season or in most cases Netflix just cancels the show.
I mean either just do a mini series where I know it's only going to be X episodes and it's done or give us more episodes per season.

I wanted to re-watch Xena the other day and realized that each season has 22 (!!!) episodes.
That show went on for 6 seasons. I got a little intimidated by that shear number of episodes.
How did we do it back then 😮‍💨

I think most people watch two seasons of a streaming show, and they check out

I used to be a die hard completist so I would stick out any show I started watching but now I check out after a show starts sucking, regardless of how many seasons or episodes there are. But if I like a show, I will keep watching if it's two seasons or ten seasons.

I think some shows need a short episode run (like WandaVision and Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor, for example), while other shows could do with more episodes to give more time for the plot to breathe and to even pack in more breadcrumbs if you want to establish a mystery. Veronica Mars season 1 was a lot of fun because it had around 20 episodes, so they had time to develop a red herring for a few episodes before that led to a plot twist or new piece of info. It's all rushed now.

Some older shows went for too long with too much filler taking away from the main plot, but I think there can be a nice balance, depending on the concept.

I think I agree more with ONTDers saying that what's killing shows isn't the quantity of episodes but the length of time we wait for a new season. Bridgerton should be up to season 5 now, not season 3. (And Shadow and Bone should be dropping its third season now. I am still in denial!)
